Here's http://eater.com/archives/2013/04/24/%3Ca+href%3D"<a href=" http:="" www.youtube.com="" atch?feature="player_embedded&v=8bNLX4VymO4"" target="_blank">an ad for the 2013 season of MasterChef Australia that is chock full of offensive gender stereotypes. For this year's season of the popular amateur cooking competition, contestants will be split by gender into "Team Boys" and "Team Girls." With an ad where men and women rely on outdated cliches to make their case for winning, MasterChef may well be trolling. Is it possible that the producers really thought that saying "Women are good cooks, but men can be great cooks" wouldn't piss people off?

Reasons why the men are confident: "Men are more experimental"; "When a man puts his mind to a job it always comes out better"; "Men have better focus." Lynton ("The Cattle Rancher") puts Team Boys' advantage into historical perspective: "If you look at all the top chefs in the world, they have one thing in common. They're men." It's a bold choice for a show to use the history of gender inequality in professional kitchens as evidence of male superiority.

Reasons why the women are confident: "A woman can multitask"; "The average woman cooks 1,000 meals a year, men can't compete with that." The most regressive argument comes from "Daddy's Little Princess": "Women are better at presentation, we're used to grooming ourselves." Never mind talent, women make can make things look pretty. Below, the cringe-worthy ad.
